• In the past autistics were assumed to not be interested in sexual relationships but this myth has now been disproven by research.

• Recent research has shown that the expectations that autistics have for satisfying sexual relationships might differ from those of neurotypicals (Rosqvist, 2014). 

While research comparing sexual orientation in autistic and neurotypical populations is scarce and inconclusive, some studies have reported greater 'atypical gender identity' characterized by identifying more with the gender not assigned at birth, especially among autistic females (Young & Cocallis, 2023).

• Some research suggests that autistic males indulge less in sexual thoughts and behaviors compared to their neurotypical peers (Young & Cocallis, 2023).

• It was also found that both male and female autists reported more modest beliefs about their own sexual attractiveness compared to neurotypicals (Young & Cocallis, 2023).

• Both autistic males and females were found to have more frequently experienced acts of victimization such as sexual coercion and unwanted sexual contact (Young & Cocallis, 2023).

• Parent reports suggest that their autistic children exhibit inappropriate behaviors that might be interpreted as sexually motivated such as speaking about sex, masturbating in public, seeking intimate contact with family members or strangers and displaying intrusive courting behavior (Young & Cocallis, 2023).

• Research suggests a negative correlation between psychosexual knowledge and inappropriate sexual behavior, hence, the need for sexual education.

• Autistic students might need a specially designed curriculum to teach them sexual knowledge and societal expectations in a more concrete manner (Young & Cocallis, 2023).

• The Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) offers guidelines to communities to help them develop individualized sexual education programs.​
